The experience one can get from engaging in real-world organizational activities is obviously invaluable, but know what you also need to get out of the experience. For example, I needed an opportunity to showcase my skills in hosting a learning management system (LMS) but didn't have that kind of money. The organization was shopping for a good LMS but really didn't understand the mechanics and inner workings. One can run Moodle on a laptop and learn much, but it's not the same as a real-world application. The trick was convincing management that I could host, install, and run the LMS. I convinced them to allow a test site; the rest was history. Be bold and fully engaged as an intern and everybody wins!
