WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The new Waco water restrictions and extreme weather are causing a shift in the way homeowners design and care for their lawns. The shift is towards designs that require less mulch and plants that are drought-resistant.

“Recent droughts and recent hard freezes have definitely changed the way people look at plant selection,” Maintenance Manager of Fitzgerald’s Landscape, Donny Fratus said. “Going for longevity versus having to redo their landscape every year due to these extreme conditions we’ve been facing.”

Head Westview Nursery Landscaper Colt Houck said there has been a trend away from traditional landscaping.

“I’ve noticed a lot more doing hardscapes whether it’s rock flowerbeds, or granite or doing just zeroscaping,” Houck said. “I’ve done a lot of that within the last 2 years more than I have the last 10 years.”

Hardscaping and zeroscaping require less to no mulch compared to landscaping.

New Waco water restrictions contribute to this trend. Residents can now only water their yards three days a week. Houck said this hasn’t hindered business.

“This year, I mean we really haven’t seen a big drop off only because we warmed up very unusually early this year,” Houck said. “So I’ve been busy all year long and it hasn’t really slowed down on that.”

Houck advised homeowners to take advantage of their three days of water by using more of it less frequently.

“You just make a stronger root system letting the roots dry out and then water begins to really shoot those roots down,” Houck said.

Houck said the optimal time to plant grass or trees is during the fall or winter months.

Landscapers recommend Perennials and Holly’s to homeowners looking to add plants to their lawns due to their drought resistance.
