KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - Tyrell McCrea is more than ready to lead the Chaparral Bobcats to the next level.

Killeen ISD and executive director for athletics Matt Carroll on Monday announced McCrea as Chaparral’s next football head coach and athletic coordinator.

“We would like to welcome Coach Tyrell McCrea to our KISD athletics family,” Carroll said. “We are blessed to have Coach McCrea take over our athletic coordinator and football head coach position at Chaparral. He brings a winning spirit and dedicated work ethic, and he’s known for his high character and love for kids. We are excited for the future of Chaparral football.”

McCrea shifts into his new role after spending one season as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for four-year-old, Class 4A Comal Davenport, which won a district title and went 11-4 in 2023. The Wolves offense averaged 494.3 yards and 42.6 points per game.

“Words can’t express the feeling of having the opportunity to lead a program, especially a young program like Chaparral. I am grateful for the opportunity, and plan to hit the ground running and take our programs to another level,” said McCrea, who was on campus Monday.

McCrea’s extensive, wide range of coaching experience also includes stops at San Antonio Burbank (2020-2022), two stints at his alma mater Del Rio High School (2013-2015 and 2017-2019) that were split by two seasons as the athletic director and football head coach at Brackett High School, Edgewood Kennedy, San Antonio Roosevelt, North East Madison and Navarro College.

Over the course of his career, McCrea also has been a head coach for powerlifting, softball, track and field, wrestling and girls basketball.

A graduate in the Class of 2002 from Del Rio High School, McCrea obtained a bachelor’s degree from Angelo State University –– where he played football and baseball –– and a master’s degree in athletic administration from Ohio University.

McCrea is married to wife Jutawn and they have two children, Teegan Joy and Tia June.

“Our goals are to compete with character, class and make Chaparral relevant across the community and state of Texas,” McCrea said. “We plan to do that by giving our student-athletes the best experience possible in the process.”

Chaparral is entering its third year as a school and program. The Bobcats, who will compete in District 8-5A-I, open the 2024 football season Aug. 30 at Kyle Lehman. Their home debut is Sept. 5 vs. Manor New Tech at Joseph L. Searles III Stadium. District opponents include Cedar Park, Georgetown, Georgetown East View, Lake Belton, Leander, Leander Glenn and Leander Rouse.
