Weekend heat and a few showers gives way to heavy rain and strong winds from Beryl early next week

This morning is starting off cooler than usual due to yesterday’s cold front. Some spots are waking to upper 60s, which is about 7-10 degrees below yesterday morning. The southern half of the area isn’t as cool, but still waking up to a little less humidity. The cold front reached the Hill Country overnight, but it will start to dissipate this afternoon and fully disappear by tonight or early Sunday morning. This means temperatures will climb back to normal with highs in the low 90s this afternoon. Along that almost washed out front we could see some scattered showers and storms develop this afternoon/early evening. The best chance for rain today will be in the southern half of the area. Tonight, the south wind will bring warm, moist air back into the region. This comes just before Beryl, which is expected to arrive to the Texas coastline Sunday night into Monday morning.

Expect a quick warm-up on Sunday, and not a lot of rain. The combination of heat + tropical moisture moving in from Tropical Storm Beryl will push the heat index into triple digits. While some areas might briefly experience conditions that meet Heat Advisory criteria, these instances will be isolated and short-lived, so widespread heat warnings are not anticipated. Sunday is mainly rain-free.

By Monday we expect the outer bands of Beryl will begin affecting the area. The National Hurricane Center predicts Beryl will re-strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall along the middle Texas coast. As it moves inland, Beryl’s path is expected to cross the eastern half of the region. Initially, heavy rainfall will impact southeast and eastern Central Texas. As Beryl progresses north/northeast as weakens, the heaviest rainfall will shift to the northeast, moving the flood threat further north and west. There is also a potential for localized tornadoes within the rain bands moving onshore, but chance is low in Central Texas. We will track closely as Beryl makes landfall.

Rain and storm chances will continue through the week as a our summertime high-pressure stays anchored away from Texas. Rain chances will decrease after Tuesday, but the persistent tropical moisture will support daily chances for showers and storms through the week. This will also help with the heat! Highs will likely stay in the 80s from Monday to Wednesday with low 90s returning late next week.
