WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Every year, the Humane Society of Central Texas expects to take in lots of strays around the Fourth of July, and this year was no different.

The loud sounds of fireworks can be very confusing and scary for pets. Younger animals who have never heard or seen them can be especially spooked.

Many strays, and even pets, escape their yards to try and hide. Most of these runaways end up back in the Humane Society. As of this afternoon, the shelter has already taken in seven dogs and expects more before the day closes out.

Volunteer coordinator Carmen Cheek says to make sure your pet has an updated microchip and nametag to make sure they can get home safely if they are scared easily.

“Definitely take those precautions if you have a dog you know is scared of that,” Cheek said. “Make sure they are secured in your house, or if they’re in the yard, make sure you’re checking on them periodically.”

Since the holiday fell on a Thursday this year, they expect more fireworks to follow into the weekend. In turn, more strays will be out on the streets.

On an average day, the shelter takes in around three to four dogs. On busier days like the Fourth of July and holiday weekends, they can see up to twenty dogs a day or more.

The Humane Society is at full capacity, but if you see a stray dog, call at (254) 754-1454 or bring them in to help find their home.
