U.S. Coast Guard warns beachgoers of multiple shark sightings, attacks at South Padre Island

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (CBS) - The U.S. Coast Guard is warning beachgoers at South Padre Island to not go into the water after multiple shark attacks and sightings were reported.

South Padre Island officials confirmed one person was taken to a hospital after a severe shark attack.

The first attack was reported at 11:00 a.m. along beach access 14. South Padre Island Fire and Police Departments provided aid to the victim, according to South Padre Island PIO Nikki Soto.

The U.S. Coast Guard is deploying drones, boats and a helicopter to perform surveillance in the area and keep beachgoers safe from further attacks.

The condition of the victims is unknown at this time.
