WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A Central Texas woman who has led an online group of hundreds of women worldwide, encouraging them to wear a dress every day the month of May, finally met a Facebook member in Waco for the first time who gifted her with a handmade quilt featuring dresses.

Autumn Outlaw started “Dress A Day in May” 14 years ago as an effort to help ladies find more uses for dresses hanging in their closets.

The women wear dresses and then post a picture of themselves in the group.

While it started with a handful of Autum’s friends, it’s grown now to include over 400 women around the world.

Lee Ann Radell, 66, of Waco, joined the group a few years ago after seeing the fun her daughter, Amanda Swennes, had enjoyed for years.  Amanda, who now lives in Utah, was one of the first people part of the group.

Lee Ann had never met Autumn when she decided to make a quilt to recognize to recognize the online tradition.

“I started quilting about three years ago and made quilt patterns I liked,” Lee Ann said. “After doing several, I started getting what I call nudges as to a person that the quilt should go to as a recipient.”

When Lee Ann saw the pattern called “Millie’s Dresses,” she knew it was perfect for Autumn.

“I knew I had to make it for Autumn to celebrate her for creating Dress a Day in May,” she said.

Lee Ann posted a picture of the quilt while she was making it and Autumn commented that she loved it, having no idea Lee Ann was making it for her.

Lee Ann eventually posted on social media that the quilt was being gifted to Autumn.

“I think it’s so nice that she thought of me and that it’s such a neat thing that Dress a Day in May has brought so many people together just over wearing a dress each day in the month of May,” Autumn said.

Autumn and Lee Ann met up for lunch at Baris Italian restaurant in Waco where Lee Ann presented Autumn with the quilt.

The two then snapped a picture to share with their online community.

“I was just blown away,” Autum said. “I’ve met some really great friends.”
