WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A Waco man previously charged with injuring a 2-month-old infant he left unattended in a bathtub has been charged with assaulting the infant’s pregnant mother in the back of a car, an affidavit alleges.

Javarrion Dowdy, 18, was previously charged with injury to a child and assault causing bodily injury to a family member. He has since been charged with assault of a pregnant person, a third-degree felony.

On June 3, police had a voicemail from the infant’s mother saying her phone was broken and she was calling from a new number.

Police learned that on May 30, 2024, the infant’s mother called police saying Dowdy had assaulted her while they were in the backseat of a car in the 1300 block of West Waco Drive, an affidavit states.

Dowdy, according to the affidavit, became angry while in the car and started punching the infant’s mother in the thigh and dug his nails into her ankle, leaving indentations.

The vehicle was stopped so Dowdy could get out and the infant’s mother let Dowdy use her phone to call a family member.

After Dowdy finished his conversation, the affidavit states he threw the infant’s mother’s phone on the ground, picked it up and ran away.

Dowdy was subsequently charged in the incident.

Previously, Dowdy was charged in an April 30 incident where a 2-month-old infant reportedly suffered acute respiratory failure and cardiac arrest after being left unattended in the bathtub. Paramedics found the infant unresponsive and had to revive her at the scene, the affidavit states.

Dowdy offered to bathe the infant while the infant’s mother made dinner, an affidavit states.

According to an arrest warrant, Dowdy put the infant into a bath seat and left her in the bathtub to listen to her mother’s phone conversation.

After the phone conversation was over, Dowdy noticed the water in the bathtub was too high and the infant was on her back unresponsive, according to the arrest warrant.

The infant was stabilized at a Waco hospital and was transferred to McLane Children’s Hospital in Temple.
