COPPELL, Texas (KWTX) - After hearing that this year’s Air Raid offensive clinic was no longer coming to Texas, former Central Texas high school football coach, Andrew Gochis, decided to fix the problem himself: by starting his own.

“We were like, man, this opens up a huge spot in our market,: said Gochis. “Because a lot of Texas High school football coaches are running an Air Raid type philosophy.”

He titled the clinic the “One Back” Football Clinic, a play on the Air Raid football formation of having just the quarterback in the backfield

“We just started to get to work on it, seeing if we can find a venue, seeing if we could find dates that worked for people, and God continued to provide for us.”

Over 50 coaches, high school and college, attended the first One Back clinic at Gracepoint Church in Coppell. Gochis even brought Little River Academy offensive coordinator Logan Simmons, who taught other coaches about his successful “one back” style offense.

“Anytime you can get in a room with a bunch of like minded men, it’s incredibly important,” said Simmons.

Sure, most of the coaches came to learn offensive schemes, but another purpose of the clinic was for coaches to learn about some of the X’s and O’s off the field.

“Very few people understands the realities of the coach’s life except for other coaches,” said Gochis.

“The pressures from the outside, on winning and losing, you have real lives happening with your kids, with your coaches, all that kind of stuff,” said Simmons.

Gochis realized that many coaches, including himself and Simmons, lean on their faith, which inspired him to incorporate it in his clinic. Gochis and his team passed out devotionals, facilitated fellowship, and even had a sports minister, Stewart Hardy, come speak to the coaches.

“To give them that coach’s perspective of somebody else saying, ‘Hey I’ve been on a sideline, I’ve been yelled out, parents have come after me, kids have come after me,’ but God has been faithful. Hopefully, they get what they needed from that spiritual aspect so they can serve their kids well.”

“If you don’t have that thing to lean onto, everything is going to fall apart.” said Simmons. “You have to have something bigger to build your foundation on and realize, ahh, this is temporary.”

Gochis said they are hoping to bring next year’s One Back clinic to Waco next year.
