Aggies’ pitching staff holds off Gators to open College World Series
OMAHA, Nebraska (KBTX) - After a 4+ hour weather delay, the Texas A&M baseball team beat Florida 3-2 Saturday night/early Sunday morning in their first game at the Men’s College World Series.
The Aggies’ pitchers struck out 16 batters. Justin Lamkin got the start on the mound and had 6 strikeouts in 3 innings. Chris Cortez added 6 strikeouts in 3 innings of relief, and Evan Aschenbeck threw the final 3 innings with 4 strikeouts.
The play of the game came in the top of the ninth inning when Jace LaViolette scaled the right field wall to rob a would-be two-run home run that would’ve given Florida the lead.
Caden Sorrell scored the game-winning run on an RBI double in the bottom of the third.
Travis Chestnut had an RBI single in the second inning, and Ali Camarillo scored on a wild pitch in the second.
The Gators scored both of their runs in the seventh inning.
Texas A&M advances to the winner’s bracket of the College World Series and will take on Kentucky on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
Florida will take on NC State in an elimination game on Monday at 1:00 p,m,
