WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Former Baylor All-American Brittney Griner has been named to her third Team USA Olympic squad, announced by USA Basketball on Tuesday.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist from the 2016 and 2020 games has a shot for a third-straight medal in Paris, joining former Team USA teammates Diana Taurasi, Brenna Stewart, A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd and Chelsea Gray. Also on the team, off the inaugural 3x3 gold medal, are Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young. Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper and Sabrina Ionescu will make their first appearances on an Olympic roster.

On the undefeated squad in the 2020 Tokyo Games, Griner started in all six games and averaged 16.5 points, tying Wilson for the team high and scoring 99 points in the 6-0 run. Behind a dominant performance in the final-round game against Japan, she shot 77.8% from the field for 30 points with five rebounds and three blocks.

In Rio, where USA also went 6-0, Griner scored 9.8 points per game with a standout double-double performance against China in the group phase, shooting 81.8% for 18 points and 13 rebounds.

The most decorated women’s basketball player in Baylor history, and one of the most accomplished collegiate players in the NCAA, Griner finished her collegiate career with 3,283 points and 1,305 rebounds. Griner was a two-time consensus National Player of the Year and four-time All-Big 12 First Team and All-Defensive Team selection. She won the league’s Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2010, before sweeping the Player and Defensive Player of the Year Awards in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Griner finished her career as a three-time All-American by five different outlets and holds the conference record with 21 Big 12 Player of the Week honors. She recorded the first triple-double in Baylor women’s basketball history and holds the Big 12 record in points scored (3,283), field goals made (1,247), free throws made (787) and attempted (1,054) and blocks (748). Additionally, she still holds the NCAA blocks record for a season (223) and career. She’s the only player in NCAA women’s basketball history to have over 2,000 career points and 500 career blocks. For her career, Griner scored in double figures in 146 of 148 games played, which is the second most in NCAA history.

The Houston, Texas, native is one of 12 players to earn an Olympic gold medal (2016, 2020), FIBA World Cup gold medal (2014, 2018), WNBA title (2014) and NCAA title (2012).

The XXXIII Olympiad is set to kick off with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 26, and the women’s group phase begins on Monday, July 29. After 16 full days of competition, the closing ceremony and gold medal game are slated for Sunday, Aug. 11.
