LIMESTONE COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) - The second annual Chad Walker Memorial Scholarship Fishing Tournament will take place this weekend on Lake Limestone after being delayed from April due to high winds and bad weather.

Trooper Chad Walker was shot and killed in the line of duty in Mexia in March 2021 as he was trying to help a man he believed to be stranded when the man shot him through his windshield.

Chad’s friends and family have since done a number of things to keep his memory alive and fishing combined with helping kids through scholarships is top of their list.

Tobie Walker said she’s been looking forward to this date for a long time.

“I am so eager to host the fishing tournament this weekend and fellowship with our loved ones and friends,” Tobie said. “Chad loved to be on the water anytime he could be.”

The tournament not only keeps the memory alive of the avid fisherman and outdoorsman, but it also raises funds for local graduating seniors.

Last year, the tournaments proceeds allowed the Walker family to award $28,000 in scholarships to eight different graduating seniors from Groesbeck High School where Trooper Walker graduated in 2000.

This year, Tobie was able to award $16,000.

“Handing out $16,000 in scholarships to graduates at GHS wouldn’t have been possible without our generous sponsors on all levels,” Tobie said.

Tobie added that Chad always took special interest in young people so he would be honored to know money for them is being raised in his name.

“He loved the youth and to see children succeeding. Just knowing that all kids need that extra push. I know that financial burdens are heavy,” Tobie said.

Sponsorships are still available at $250 level.

Competitors can also enter.

The cost is $50 for bass or catfish or $100 for both categories. Teams of up to 3 are an option.

Last year, 60 competitors entered.
