WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A local nonprofit that’s been helping struggling families for over three decades is hoping for a big financial boost this weekend at a Crawfish boil.

The Waco GoodFellas is hosting the Crawfish boil at Lakeside Bar in Waco from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and all proceeds will go to funding the nonprofit’s mission of helping families in need, especially around Christmas time.

Randy Crook is a founding member of The Waco GoodFellas which started with a handful of friends in 1994 driving around Waco neighborhoods during the holidays and passing out gifts.

“Our history goes back over 30 years. We’ve done so much for kids in need over the years and we’ve seen a lot of kids blossom from three and four years old when we met them and now, we’re seeing them as adults and they’ve never forgotten what we did for them,” Crook said.  “So, the reward is just seeing the kids grow up and never forget what we did for them.”

The nonprofit doesn’t just help with Christmas.

They’ve also provided laptops to Waco ISD students and given clothes to families in need. They’ve helped with home repairs, appliances, and shelter for numerous families. If they see a need, they answer the call.

The community has poured into the good work of the GoodFellas. At a fundraiser in July two years ago called “Christmas in July,” they raised $200,000 for the organization.

Nearly 2,000 supporters turned out as well.

Member Buck Alambar said the work they do is important.

“I wish the supporters could see what we see when we do the Christmas in December with these families and the positive difference that we’ve made,” Alambar said.

The Crawfish boil will also include shrimp and lobsters. Plates will be $25.

They will also have drinks, games, and raffles as well as live music by Sloppy Joe Band, Brit Kerr and Larissa Boyd.

“We’re going to have a great event to raise money to help these families and help these kids,” Alambar said.
