In 1945, with the help of theatre volunteers, the then Chairman of the Baylor University Drama Department, Dr. Paul Baker, reformed the organization that would take shape of the Waco Civic Theatre.

During that time, the famed Rockefeller family helped by providing funds to keep the organization afloat.

It was granted its nonprofit status in 1955.

Current Theatre Secretary and longtime volunteer Piers Bateman, 83, has been around the theatre since the 1960′s.

“I came to Waco in 1965 from England and I saw my first show about then at the Waco Civic Theatre and it had only been built a few years before, the building we’re in now,” Bateman said.

The theatre has been a family affair for Bateman since as his son even met his wife on stage.

“In 1992, my son was Prince Charming in Cinderella and he met Cinderella who is Jennifer and two years later they were married.”

Addison Cendejas is director of education at the theatre and said the opportunities it’s given, particularly kids, is remarkable.
