Leon, Texas (KBTX) - News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest classroom champion Sawyer Merry.

The Leon High School senior has a 3.83 grade point average and ranks 4th in her class.

She was a Nucor Top 5 recipient in 2023 and has been on the All A Honor Roll since 2021.

Sawyer treasures and is truly thankful for the Leon Community and has given back in every way that she can with aiding in things like Veteran’s Day Program, Can Drives, Leon Jr. High Spring League and FFA.

“I can put it in like half of what they’ve put into me to bring awareness or just like, bring something back to this town, it’s completely worth it,” said Classroom Champion Sawyer Merry. “No matter what distress put it puts on my plate. What gets me up in the morning to be the best me is my mother. She’s honestly been my rock. And she’s just. She really brought me into religion and to faith and to God.”

“She’s one of the hardest working students we have here at Leon ISD,” said ag teacher and FFA advisor DeAnna Bowdoin. “She’s a student that’s involved in pretty much everything the school has to offer. im going to miss a student who holds those around her to a high standard and ya know some accountability.”

Athletically Sawyer plays volleyball, tennis, golf, and runs track for the Lady Cougars. In 2021 she was Co-Offensive Player of the Year for volleyball and academic all-district, all state, and first team all-district recipient for volleyball.

“This day, it’s hard to find teenagers that are so self-motivated and driven, and she’s just as mentally tough as she is physically,” said head volleyball coach and track coach Elizabeth Dison. “Sawyer was the go to because she doesn’t crumble under pressure. She thrives off of pressure and competition. And it just motivates her and she gets it done.”

After high school, Sawyer wants to go to UT Tyler to play volleyball and to become an english professor.
