WACO, Texas (KWTX) -Dozens of eclipse experts and scientists from across the country came together today at the Waco convention center.

The STEAM eclipse event aims to educate kids on science, technology, engineering, art and math.

David Young with the non-profit RoboNation says they can engage and inspire kids to think differently.

“Instead of a textbook they’ve got a hands-on experience where they are learning by doing something and falling in love with the science and engineering.”

Experts with NASA came down from Washington DC to share their findings about the eclipse.

Director of the Astrophysics at NASA headquarters Dr. Mark Clampin says that “this was a great opportunity to not just come and see the event ourselves, but also tie in the general public and get people excited about the eclipse and about the science around the eclipse.”

Clampin says that conversations can lead to inspiration.

“[I] just love talking about what we do at NASA and inspiring people, and it’s a great way of bringing in the next generation of scientists and engineers, getting kids excited at a young age about science.”

Interactive activities encouraged both kids and parents to learn about the eclipse and the science behind it in different ways.

Jude Magnuson says that each booth would try to help him “learn about [the eclipse] but through fun stuff... it’s just really cool.”

Texas Director of Discovery Education, Paula Taylor, says that creativity and education can help young ones understand bigger concepts in science.

“[It] is really fun but also very educational and just a really great wholistic experience for them.”
