City of Temple issues disaster declaration ahead of the Great American Eclipse

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - The City of Temple has issued a disaster declaration ahead of the Great American Eclipse on April 8.

Mayor Tim Davis signed the declaration after a unanimous vote at the city council meeting on April 4.

The disaster declaration will be in effect from April 5 until April 9.

To help minimize traffic city offices and facilities in Temple will be closed the day of the eclipse.

Additionally, residential garbage collections will be paused on Monday, April 8 and will resume the following day on Tuesday, April 9. Tuesday’s collections will also be scheduled for Wednesday April 10.

With the City of Temple expecting a large increase in population during the eclipse, the city reminds resident of some important safety tips including:

  • Use protective eyewear to view the eclipse
  • Avoid driving unless necessary
  • Get essential groceries and gas ahead of time
  • If you are unable to call emergency services, text 911 instead
  • More information about the eclipse can be found on https://www.discovertemple.com/eclipse2024/

On April 2, the City of Killeen issued a state of disaster ahead of the eclipse, following Bell County’s disaster declaration on Feb. 21.
