The Great American Eclipse may lead to abnormal changes in animal behavior

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - On April 8, Central Texans will get to experience a total solar eclipse, a rare phenomenon that can have some interesting effects on animals and livestock.

Part of what makes this so incredible to watch is the impact it has on the world around us, but one of the stranger effects of this is the changes in animal behavior.

In 2017, North Carolina State University did a research study on animal behavior at a zoo during the total solar eclipse.

They found that approximately 75 percent of the animals studied had a notable reaction, but why?

“When it comes to the question of how do animals react during an eclipse, it’s helpful to think about what actually happens during that eclipse time,” said Cameron Park Zoo Director Brendan Wiley.

Dr. Barbara Castanheira Endl explained that as the moon fully covers the sun, the sky will start to darken and the temperature will drop in a matter of minutes.

These changes are what influence strange animal behavior, especially for nocturnal and diurnal animals.

They “will perceive the total solar eclipse as if it would be the sunset or the sunrise” and start switching from their day to night time routines,” said Endl.

But every animal reacts differently, which is what makes this phenomenon so unique.

Cameron Park Zoo is home to more than 1,700 animals and 300 different species.

On the day of the eclipse they will remain open, but around the time of totality their staff will be closely observing the animals in case they have a reaction to the event.

“We are curious to know if that will happen, and we’ll be there to help our animals through it per say if any of them get confused,” Wiley shared.

If you want to witness this change in animal behavior yourself then just take a look at your own pet.

“I think it would be a fun exercise and a fun experiment for the kids to bring the puppies outside, and the animals outside, and look at their behaviors and observe what they are doing,” shared Dr. Castanheira Endl.

While the eclipse isn’t harmful to animals, it could cause confusion and anxiety so be sure to keep an eye on your pet and know how to comfort them.
