“She wants to be that person for everybody else, too,” said spanish teacher Yessica Betancourt. “So it’s not just about her being successful. It’s about what can she do to bring everybody with her. I’m first generation. College as well, so seeing a student reach that and have that potential and do it, that’s that’s big. That’s huge.”

“So what gets me going every morning is definitely being first generation and breaking the cycle and getting a bachelor’s degree in anything,” said Brianna Cardenas. “Balancing extracurriculars and academics at the same time. I mean, to me it was kind of fun in a way, but it was definitely challenging.”

Athletically Brianna participates in Basketball, Powerlifting, and throws discus and shot put for the Lady Bulldogs. In 2022 Brianna was the first woman from New Waverly to take 3rd place at State for Woman’s Powerlifting and was Regionals Champion.

“she just a self-starter,” said head girls track and basketball coach Donna Gilliam. “I can tell her what she need to do and she’ll go and do it. She’s always been like, Follow your dream, follow your heart. If you work hard and put everything you have, you’re going to get to have success.”
