Two Fort Cavazos soldiers charged in 2023 murder of Sergeant
FORT CAVAZOS, Texas (KWTX) - Two Fort Cavazos soldiers have been charged in the 2023 murder of a Sergeant, according to a charge sheet obtained by KWTX.
SPC. Nicholas B. Lowery is charged with one count of unpremeditated murder and two counts of obstructing justice and SPC. Rene D. Heber is charged with accessory to murder after the fact, one count of obstructing justice and one count of accessory to involuntary manslaughter after the fact, the charge sheet alleges.
Lowery is accused of fatally shooting a Sergeant in the head with a handgun on or between Aug. 26, 2023, and Aug. 27, 2023, according to the charge sheet.
The charge sheet alleges that Lowery also provided false statements about the incident to law enforcement and tampered with evidence at the scene.
Heber is accused of knowing that another Lowery fatally shot a Sergeant in the head near Fort Cavazos on or between the dates of Aug. 27, 2023, and Sept. 7, 2023, the charge sheet states.
The charge sheet alleges that Heber tampered with evidence at the scene and provided false statements to law enforcement about the incident.
The trial dates for both men are currently set for some time in May 2024 at Fort Cavazos.
