PORTLAND, Ore (KPTV) - Abnormally high amounts of smog forced an air quality warning into effect Monday, and agencies are warning people to take extra care while outdoors.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality said sometimes heat waves can play a role in creating the right weather patterns to create smog in areas and lead to them issuing an air quality advisory.

“Which can be harmful to your health,” said Michael Loch, Public Affairs Specialist for Oregon DEQ.

During the first heatwave of the year, the Multnomah County Medical Examiners Office reported it’s investigating four deaths.

The advisory went out Monday for those in Willamette Valley and the Portland-Vancouver metro area.

Loch said you can help dissipate smog by toning down pollution coming from aerosols or vehicles.

He suggested using public transportation or carpooling.

“Avoid idling your engine,” Loch said. “If you need to refuel your car, do so at a cooler time in the evening.”

The Oregon DEQ is also asking those who have children, are elderly, or have respiratory issues to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activity.

The Oregon DEQ expects the advisory to be in effect until Tuesday evening and encourages people to be aware of air quality levels and when it’s safe to be outdoors.
