PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - This heat wave is also impacting TriMet service in the Portland metro area.

Many people who live in the Portland metro and visitors alike said riding TriMet is a great way to get around the area.

“To come into Portland because indeed it is a great way to get in and out,” Bryan, a MAX rider said.

“It’s great public transportation. It’s a great system,” Hans Personius, a cyclist said.

However, as the heat wave hits the Portland metro, TriMet said they are having to adjust to keep their staff and customers safe.

“Right now, we are actually slowing down our trains at 95 degrees,” Mark Miller, Public Information Officer for TriMet Media Relations, said. “When we do have these tracks that experience what we call sun kink as they warm up and start to warp.”

These temperatures not only impact steel tracks, but they also can affect copper overhead wires.

“Our wires can sag,” Miller said. “When it gets really, really hot, there’s only so much counterweights can do.”

MAX rains are running no faster than 35 mph. TriMet asks riders to account for 15-to-30-minute delays.

Hollywood Transit Center was one of the stations experiencing disrupted MAX service due to a track issue nearby. TriMet said instead, shuttle buses were providing service between northeast stations.

Those working to prepare meals in food carts and outdoor eateries during this week’s heat wave have had to take extra precautions to keep themselves safe.

A commuter said this was her usual work stop and had to plan for extra time.

“It’s just really hot, so you have to take the precautions to make sure that you just stay hydrated while you’re waiting during these wait times for your shuttle,” a MAX rider said.

People said they still appreciate the service running during this extreme weather.

“I can understand about the delays due to the heat and the train rail being hot,” Lamont, a MAX rider, said.

Important to note that TriMet will not turn away anyone riding to or from a cooling center who cannot pay fare through Tuesday, July 9.
