PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - The Humane Society of the United States rescued more than 350 dogs earlier this year from two separate abuse cases, and some of those dogs are now in the Portland metro area to be adopted.

Fourteen dogs arrived in Portland on Monday afternoon on a charter flight from Wings of Rescue.

Nine of the dogs - American pit bull terrier mixes - came from a dog-fighting operation in New Jersey and they’re now at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW).

FOX 12 spoke with Sam Ellingson, Director of Communications and Marketing at HSSW, for the shelters and he says the dogs will have some time to decompress but some of them may be up for adoption as soon as this week.

Ellingson says the dogs are ready to find permanent homes.

“These are really happy, wiggly, friendly dogs who are looking for a home, so even when we were loading them off the plane, they were giving kisses through the kennel door. They’re really excited. They’re really happy, social dogs, and we think they’re going to find homes pretty quickly,” he said. “We want families to know they’re friendly. They’re happy. They’re ready to find that home.”

Every night many in Portland’s homeless community struggle to find a place to sleep.

Ellingson says they don’t see a lot of dog-fighting operations in this area so the transport is rare.

Anyone interested in possibly adopting one of the dogs at HSSW can click here. The information on the individual dogs will be posted there as soon as they’re ready to find families.

The other five dogs that arrived on Monday were taken to a shelter north of Seattle. Those dogs came from a puppy mill in Oklahoma, where they were found living in poor conditions.
