PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - A house in northeast Portland was damaged by fire and a person suffering a “medical issue” was taken to the hospital on Sunday, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.

Just before 1 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire in the 4300 block of Northeast 102nd. Crews found a fire burning in a garage and moving up a wall into the attic.

Firefighters said they found one person at the property but outside the fire “having a medical issue.” After a medical evaluation at the scene, the person was taken to the hospital where they are expected to be okay.

PF&R did not say if the medical issue was related to the fire in any way.

Due to downed powerlines and the 100-degree heat, crews struggled to fight the fire, firefighters said.

“It is very difficult for firefighters to avoid heat exhaustion in these conditions,” PF&R said. “Firefighting clothing is heavily insulated and doesn’t breathe well. This helps protect from burns and toxic smoke to some extent, but it also traps heat.”

The heat forces crews to rotate in and out quickly, and constantly hydrate, PF&R said.

Despite the extra difficulties, crews extinguished the fire and it is now being investigated, they said.
