ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) -St. Luke’s Lutheran Church is dealing with the aftermath of severe weather during Independence Day.

Water from the storms poured into the South City church early Thursday morning. It flooded the kitchen, bathrooms and more.

“Every heavy rain our church lower-level floods with backup from the sewers,” says Elaine Tesson of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

The church located on Taft Avenue has had this happen before.

“This the third time in just a couple of months. The city nor MSD has a solution,” Tesson says.

The ongoing thousands of dollars in damages is a reason Tesson says insurance companies want out and won’t help.

“Insurance threatens to cancel us. So we’re left to cover the manpower, the bills, cleaning, disinfecting, not to mention whatever items need to be replaced,” says Tesson.

She now is selling snow cones to raise money for repairs to save the church she grew up in.

“I’ve kind of just stepped in, grabbed it by the horns, and I’m riding it out, I can’t give up.”
