Whether by analysts, pundits or the oddsmakers, Mahomes set the record straight after Kansas City overcame another 10-point deficit to win Super Bowl LVIII, 25-22 over the San Francisco 49ers.

“The Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs,” Mahomes said after being named Super Bowl MVP for the third time in his career following a 34-for-46, 333 passing yard, 2-touchdown performance. “Just know that.”

Kansas City entered Sunday night’s game as anywhere between a 1.5- to 2.5-point underdog depending on the sportsbook. It was the third consecutive game the Chiefs closed as underdogs to the betting public after they were 3-point underdogs in the AFC Divisional against the Buffalo Bills and 4.5-point underdogs in the AFC Championship against the Baltimore Ravens.

“With all the adversity we’ve been through this season to come through tonight. ... I’m proud of the guys,” said Mahomes, who also ran for 66 yards and was a perfect 8-for-8 passing in overtime. “This is awesome. Legendary.”

Each time this postseason, Mahomes and the Chiefs delivered against the odds. With Mahomes as the Chiefs quarterback, Kansas City has been an underdog 13 times in six seasons. They have an 11-1-1 record against the spread and are 10-3 in the win-loss columns.

“I am going to celebrate tonight, celebrate at the parade and then work my way to get back in this game next year,” Mahomes said. “I am going to do whatever I can to be back in ths game next year. Three-peat.”
