LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KCTV) - While this year’s Super Bowl is a rematch of Super Bowl LIV in Miami, the Chiefs and 49ers connections go far beyond the team matchup.

Patrick Mahomes’ first career start at Arrowhead came against the 49ers, and his first career home touchdown pass was a completion to now 49er, Chris Conley.

In fact, it’s Conley who caught a touchdown pass in the first playoff win of the Andy Reid Chiefs era.

49ers defensive back Charvarius Ward won a Super Bowl with Kansas City in 2020, beating San Francisco.

Chiefs backup QB Blaine Gabbert and defensive end Charles Omenihu are former 49ers.

San Francisco traded QB Alex Smith to KC in 2013 as the first big move of the Reid era. Smith took the 49ers to an NFC Championship game, and led Kansas City to the postseason all but one year over his time.

There’s even the connection of this being Super Bowl 58, with 58 the number of the late Chiefs legend Derrick Thomas.

To quote Chiefs Kingdom’s Queen Taylor Swift, the “invisible strings” are there, all that’s left is to see if Sunday brings the same outcome as the last time the Chiefs and 49ers met on the biggest stage in sports.
