In 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established drinking water Health Advisories for Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). These chemicals are not currently regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and do not have established maximum contaminant levels; therefore, public water supply systems are not required to monitor for these chemicals. The EPA continues to support state and tribal efforts to address PFAS through collection and analysis of available data, and information sharing with the public.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is also taking steps to address PFAS in drinking water through a joint investigation conducted by the Bureau of Environmental Remediation and the Bureau of Water. This investigation includes development of a statewide inventory and prioritization of potential PFAS sources. This information will be used to develop a public water supply monitoring program.
