Brian Hickey

Traffic Reporter

Yep, He's that Blue Canyon guy!

For the past 20 years, Brian has taken KCRA 3 News viewers deep into Sierra snowstorms for the latest on snow totals and highway conditions, often at the iconic Blue Canyon turnoff along Interstate 80.

In the summer, Brian takes viewers to the frontline of California's biggest wildland fires for a look at suppression efforts and evacuation warnings. As a general assignment reporter, he has logged hundreds of thousands of miles on some of the area’s busiest roads and unknown roads, chasing the big stories of the day.

Brian now brings that street-level knowledge to our KCRA 3 Traffic reports weekday mornings from 5 to 9 a.m.

Brian is a fifth-generation Nevadan, born and raised in the Carson Valley, east of Lake Tahoe.

He studied Broadcast Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno where he raced on the ski team and served two terms as a student senator.

An internship at Reno's CBS affiliate, KTVN, became a paid position after graduation when Brian developed the station's first website as part of a class project.

While working behind the scenes, Brian quietly assembled a resume tape and when the opportunity arrived, was hired for his first reporting job at KTVN.

During his eight years in Reno, Brian served as a photographer, editor, producer reporter and eventually anchor of the morning news.

In 2003 Brian followed his wife to Sacramento where she finished up her medical training as an anesthesia resident at Sacramento's UC Davis Medical Center.

Brian was eventually hired by KCRA to help out during the Gov. Gray Davis recall election and 20 years later continues to inform Northern California.

Work assignments have taken Brian to the Olympics in London and Vancouver and to every corner of the U.S chasing big stories that impact the Golden State.

While on assignment, Brian fulfilled a childhood dream when he blasted through the sound barrier with the Air Force Thunderbirds and did a 9.1 "g" turn over Beale Air Force Base in an F-16.

Brian is a two-time Emmy award winner for writing and feature reporting.

When not on TV, you will find Brian biking, wakesurfing, skiing, rock climbing, hiking through the backcounty or sailing the high seas with his wife and two daughters.
