SACRAMENTO KINGS HEAD COACH MIKE BROWN IN TODAY’S EXPLORE OUTDOORS, WE TAKE A WALK DOWN CALIFORNIA’S SHORTEST HIGHWAY AND DISCOVER A PIECE OF CALIFORNIA’S GOLD RUSH HISTORY, BRIAN HICKEY SAYS. IT’S A SPOT WORTHY OF A SOCIAL MEDIA POST, AND WHILE YOU’VE PROBABLY BEEN THERE BEFORE, HE REVEALS AN INTERESTING YET LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT THE TOWER BRIDGE TODAY’S EXPLORE OUTDOORS. I CAN SEE YOUR INSTAGRAM POST ALREADY. HIKE THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF A CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY FROM WEST SACRAMENTO TO SACRAMENTO AND IF YOU WALKED ACROSS THE TOWER BRIDGE THAT WOULD BE ENTIRELY TRUE. YOU WERE LOOKING AT HIGHWAY 275. ALL OF IT. MOST PEOPLE KNOW THIS AS THE TOWER BRIDGE, BUT DID YOU KNOW IT’S CALIFORNIA’S SHORTEST HIGHWAY AT JUST 0.14 MILES, OR 737FT LONG. IT’S THE SHORTEST UNSIGNED HIGHWAY IN THE STATE. SO HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? HIGHWAY. 275 USED TO BE KNOWN AS THE WEST SACRAMENTO FREEWAY, WHICH EXTENDED FROM HIGHWAY 50 BUSINESS 80 IN WEST SACRAMENTO TO NINTH STREET ALONG CAPITOL MALL. BUT IN 1996, THAT ROUTE WAS DIVIDED, WITH WEST SACRAMENTO OPTING FOR A PEDESTRIAN AND RESIDENTIAL FRIENDLY ROAD, NOW CALLED TOWER BRIDGE GATEWAY. ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE BRIDGE. THE ROAD IS NOW CALLED CAPITOL MALL, LEAVING JUST THE BRIDGE AS A REMNANT OF THE FORMER HIGHWAY 275. AND AFTER YOU’RE DONE EXPLORING THE BRIDGE, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK OUT THE WATERFRONT IN OLD SACRAMENTO AND SPECIFICALLY ALONG THE LIGHT. POST SOME REALLY COOL HISTORICAL PHOTOS AND INFORMATION. You have likely driven, biked or walked the entire length of California’s shortest highway and didn’t even know it.Highway 275 connects Sacramento and West Sacramento across the Sacramento River, but most people know it as the Tower Bridge.On the west side of the bridge is the Tower Bridge Gateway and on the east side is Sacramento’s Capitol Mall. Right in the middle is the 737-foot-long Highway 275.The designated highway wasn’t always this short.
