College Station High School acapella group seeking community’s support for big event

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - College Station High School’s acapella group, Purple Reign, was founded two years ago and is known for performing a range of hits.

“I think my personal favorites have been ‘When the Party’s Over’ and ‘Evergreen’ because I just really like the amount of feeling that it provokes,” member Brett Bowling said.

A majority of the group’s performances have been on campus, but they’ve been given the opportunity to take their talent to a bigger stage.

The group has been invited to Total Vocal in New York City.

It brings together some of the best acapella groups from across the country, and it’s organized by Deke Sharon. He’s considered the “godfather” of acapella, according to Bowling.

“He wrote all of the original music for the ‘Pitch Perfect’ movies, and he started this show called ‘The Sing-Off,’ which the Pentatonix competed in, and he basically wrote all the music for their first album,” Bowling said.

The event is in April, and founding Purple Reign member Brayden Kissman said this would be an incredible opportunity for them.

“The chance to be able to sing with this large group of people, all like masters of singing, and it’s like you have high school things that are that but when you’re doing it on a national scale, it’s just unreal,” Kissman said.

The group needs to raise about $51,000 to get there.

Bowling said this opportunity exceeds the event itself.

“I feel like we definitely will be able to grow and learn so much from this trip and when we come back, we’ll be able to be almost as good as like other acapella groups that you may see on tv,” Bowling said.
