CLEVELAND COUNTY, Okla. (KSWO/Gray News) - Authorities in Oklahoma say two children died after they became trapped underwater while they were on a utility terrain vehicle.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident involved a UTV that was carrying six people, including four children, last Sunday.

The off-road vehicle was attempting to cross the South Canadian River when it unexpectedly dropped 10 feet and became submerged.

Four of the six occupants were able to get out with two of the children being led to shore by the adults.

However, the occupants then had trouble locating the UTV which still contained an 8-month-old and 2-year-old child.

The children were securely fastened in car seats within the vehicle, Oklahoma authorities said.

After 20 minutes, the UTV was able to be pulled out of the water, but authorities said the children who were still with the vehicle ultimately died.

The children and the adults involved were not immediately identified by authorities.
