‘Heartbreaking moment’: 8-year-old boy hit, killed by truck while riding bicycle

OTTUMWA, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) - An Iowa community is mourning the death of a child after he was backed over by a truck while riding his bike.

According to the Ottumwa Police Department, an 8-year-old child died Tuesday afternoon after a Dodge truck backed over him in a neighborhood.

The Ottumwa Community School District identified the child as Jaxxon Cain. He had just finished second grade at Douma Elementary School.

“This is a heartbreaking moment for our school district. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family during this unimaginably difficult time. We will provide all of the necessary support to help our students, staff, and families navigate through this tragedy,” a spokesperson for the school district shared.

Police said no charges have been currently filed but their investigation remains ongoing.

The Ottumwa Community School District said support services are available for those affected by the student’s death.

“We ask that you keep Jaxxon’s family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this unimaginable loss,” a spokesperson for the school district said. “Together, we will honor the memory of Jaxxon and support one another through this heart-wrenching loss.”
