Aggies one step closer to punching tickets to Paris Olympics

EUGENE, OR – Texas A&M track & field’s Ja’Qualon Scott advanced to the 110m hurdles final, while the Aggies booked another six semifinals spots on the fifth day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Thursday at Hayward Field.

Scott continued to impress in Eugene, as the Aggie standout booked his spot in Friday’s 110m hurdles final. He finished second in heat two with a time of 13.23, which earned him automatic qualification to the final.

Sam Whitmarsh and Brandon Miller got the day’s action started in the first round of the 800m, as both men punched their tickets to the semifinals. Whitmarsh topped all competitors in the event, crossing the line in 1:46.13 to book his spot in the next round, while Miller also claimed automatic qualification finishing in 1:47.10.

Aggie sophomore Camryn Dickson advanced out of heat two in the women’s 200m opening round, finishing the race in 23.37.

The fourth semifinal spot was booked by James Smith in the men’s 400m hurdles. He ran in the opening heat and finished second with a time of 50.28 to ensure his qualification to the next round.

On the women’s side of the 400m hurdles, Shamier Little and Deshae Wise wrapped up the Maroon & White’s semifinals spots. Little advanced third overall and first out of heat five in 54.93, while Wise placed fourth in heat two in 56.84.=

Texas A&M track & field’s Lamara Distin punched her ticket to Paris on the opening day of the Jamaican Olympic Trials Thursday at Independence Park.

Distin qualified for her first Olympic Games following a gold-medal winning performance at trials. The three-time NCAA Champion cleared 1.89m/6-2.25 to ensure her victory and her spot on Team Jamaica.

She enters the Games after an outstanding final season for the Aggies, which included claiming her fifth SEC title and breaking the NCAA indoor record, as she soared over 2.00m/6-6.75.

The Aggies have another pair of competitors set to compete, as freshman Abigail Martin takes the field tomorrow in the discus, while Kimar Farquharson will take part in the 4x400m relay on Sunday.

The Aggies return to Hayward Field Friday for the sixth day of competition at trials where Maggie Malone opens her javelin campaign. She is followed by Jaiya Covington and Kaylah Robinson in the 100m hurdles first round, Smith in the 400m hurdles semifinals, Whitmarsh and Miller in the 800m semifinals, Dickson in the 200m semifinals and finally Scott in the 110m hurdles final.
