PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News) - A Pinal County man is facing a manslaughter charge after a deadly high-speed crash in west Phoenix from last year.

Newly obtained court documents state that Oscar Campoy, 29, was driving 96 mph near 75th Avenue and Van Buren Street on July 15, 2023.

Authorities said Campoy then lost control of his 2012 Mercedes-Benz sedan and crashed into a 2023 BMW that was traveling north.

According to court papers, the BMW driver needed to be pulled out of the vehicle due to the extent of the damage. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.

That person’s name was immediately released by police.

Court documents stated that investigators found “no indication of any impacts or vehicular malfunctions” before Campoy lost control of his vehicle.

Detectives reconstructed the crash site and estimated that Campoy slowed to about 60 mph five seconds before the collision and 43 mph at the time of impact.

The speed limit in the area on 75th Avenue is 45 mph.

Campoy has been booked into the Maricopa County jail on a $200,000 secured-appearance bond.
