  • WHEN: Until 9pm
  • IMPACTS: Wind gusts up to 70mph, scattered hail to the size of an apple (3″ in diameter), a couple tornadoes possible in the strongest storms.
  • WHAT TO MONITOR: A weak cold front has already allowed storms to develop in a very unstable air mass. Further development is anticipated into the evening and overnight as the atmosphere continues to destabilize.

As the first round of rain dissipates, the boundary will linger. This will serve as a point of potential redevelopment for storms into the afternoon. If you have Sunday afternoon outdoor plans, it is safe to say that you may need to think about a plan B. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the severe risk for the Brazos Valley through Sunday evening. The entire area is included in a 2 out of 5 with areas along and east of the I-45 corridor upgraded to a 3 out of 5 potential.

Sunday is a very fluid situation atmospheric wise. There are many variables in play, and slight changes could greatly impact what we see across the area. All modes of severe weather will need to be monitored for, the highest risk for us is damaging wind gusts but large hail (2″+ in diameter), and a few tornadoes are also a possibility. Another widespread risk is flooding potential, as the atmosphere is very saturated. Model data continues to put down upwards of 3″-4″ in multiple locations across the Brazos Valley. The exact placement of those totals is highly dependent on where the heaviest rain bands situate themselves, but that could easily lead to areas of flooding through the evening, overnight, and Monday morning.
