BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The American National Cattlewomen was formed in 1952 to make an impact on consumers, politicians and other cattle producers. The local chapter, the Brazos Valley Cattlewomen, is hoping to get more women involved with the beef industry.

“One of the primary missions for the American National Cattlewomen is legislative. They do a lot of legislation work. Lobbying is a big deal for the American National Cattlewomen,” Andrea Woods, president of the Brazos Valley Cattlewomen said.

The local chapter works to educate and advocate for the beef industry. They host events, provide scholarships and work to protect the interests of farmers and ranchers. Their annual scholarship goes to high school seniors or college freshmen with the hopes of promoting the education of agricultural majors or those with agricultural interests.

But you don’t need to have an extensive background with agriculture to get involved with the organization.

“I would say a third of our Members don’t even own cattle. You just have to love beef and want to know more about,” said Woods.

If you’re still nervous about dipping your toes into the agriculture industry, Woods says there are plenty of people to lend a hand.

“Wherever you go, there’s people that want to help you. And I would say if you’re going to do it, get involved in an organization because that is where you learn you can ask questions,” said Woods.
