BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Just as Monday’s solar eclipse crossed over the Brazos Valley, a tornado watch was issued for a majority of the Brazos Valley. While that round of thunderstorms has come to an end, more stormy, messy, and potentially significant weather is expected Tuesday morning and Tuesday night. The entire Brazos Valley is once again marked for a potential of severe weather ahead of sunrise Wednesday.

SEVERE WEATHER CONCERNS

Tuesday is another day that a large amount of Texas real estate is outlined for the potential of severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entirety of our area under a 3 out of 5 “numerous” risk for severe storms anytime.

  • TIMING: An isolated chance for a significant storm or two in the late afternoon through late evening, a likely round of storms between 2am and 6am Wednesday.
  • AREAS WITH THE HIGHEST IMPACT CHANCE: Isolated storms that could produce hail concerns should be confined to the Northern or Central Brazos Valley through the evening hours. The more likely round of storms is anticipated to bring rain to most, if not all, of the area -- although the most impactful storms have a greater chance of impacting areas across the Southern Brazos Valley down to the Houston area and Upper Texas Coast.
  • POTENTIAL IMPACTS: Large hail up to the size of a golfball to egg size, a tornado concern -- including a chance for a EF-2 or stronger tornado during the very early hours of Wednesday, primarily across the far east/southeastern portions of the area, and strong wind gusts upwards of 70mph in a few spots.

WHY WE ARE MONITORING THE VERY EARLY HOURS OF WEDNESDAY SPECIFICALLY

The disturbance has been consistently modeled to pop out of South Texas and push through parts of the Brazos Valley between midnight and sunrise Wednesday.

Where the strongest portions of this line of storms comes together, heavy rain will also be a concern. Some hi-resolution forecast data projects localized 3″ to 5″ of rain could fall in a few hours time as this disturbance passes by. The highest potential seems to be somewhere between Austin, Waller, Montgomery, and Harris Counties. As this line of storms bows out around the small area of low pressure, this is where the damaging wind to 70mph could become a concern along with the potential for a few nocturnal tornadoes. The greatest risk of this impact is at the very eastern fringe of our area, but should be monitored as this rowdy round of storms passes by.

WHAT TO MONITOR GOING FORWARD

Early, pre-sunrise Wednesday morning’s storm activity is highly expected at a 90% coverage. What will need to be checked on is the potential for storms to drift into parts of the Northern Brazos Valley Tuesday morning along with a chance for isolated strong/severe storms at times in the early evening hours. As the latest data comes into the PinPoint Weather Center it will be updated on-air, online, and on the PinPoint Weather App.
