BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The Brazos Valley is bookending this week with rain and storm chances. While Monday’s risk was more conditional and ended up being a relatively quiet day on radar, Friday tries to bring those rain and rumbles to fruition for at least portions of the Brazos Valley.

WHEN: Friday sunrise through midday.

WHAT: Isolated storms with the potential for strong wind gusts, pocket change sized hail, and a low tornado concern.

WHERE: Mainly contained to the northern reaches of the Brazos Valley.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the northeastern half of the Brazos Valley in the 2 out of 5 risk for strong to severe thunderstorms. Areas south and southwest have been downgraded to the 1 out of 5 risk. While not every storm that pops up locally will be strong/severe, the potential to see a few stronger storms is not out of the question. Data as of Thursday evening shows the best potential to see those stronger cells exists in our northernmost counties as the line of storms breaks apart.

If storms can tap into the severe ingredients overhead, pocket change sized hail up to the size of a quarter and wind gusts up to 60mph will be the most common storm concern. If these storms are able to stay in a more linear set up, we will monitor for more of a wind concern. There is enough “spin” in the atmosphere to support a couple of tornadic cells in our northeastern counties, but the concern is on the lower end. As for rain totals? They are not that impressive. Some areas may not even see rain, while others have the potential to snag upwards of 0.50″.

By Friday afternoon, the rain and thunderstorm concern drops off rapidly as much drier air moves into the Brazos Valley. Behind this round of rain, a cold front moves through and sets up a cool, crisp, and really nice weekend.
