Be Remarkable: Bryan woman coordinates ‘Meals of Love’ to help others
Teresa Smith is the coordinator and driving force behind the meal distribution program that begins in the kitchen of a church in Bryan.
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Twice a month, the kitchen inside First Methodist Church in Bryan becomes a place where good food and good hearts come together.
“We will not serve anything to the residents that I would not serve to my husband and family,” said Teresa Smith, the coordinator for a program called Meals of Love. It’s a group that volunteers their time in the kitchen making healthy home-cooked style meals that are then hand-delivered to residents of an affordable housing retirement community.
“When you’re a single person living alone, it’s not going to work easily for you to prepare the kind of meals that we prepare,” said Smith, who has helped coordinate this mission for several years.
A written devotional message is also included with each meal.
What makes the group even more special is it includes volunteers who come from other churches across the area to help each time they step into the kitchen and they all praise the work Smith is doing.
“Teresa is the one that heads it up, she does all the shopping and watches the budget when we come in, we say, Teresa, what do you want us to do?” said Dana Daniel.
Each month close to 300 meals are delivered to residents, many of whom now have a personal connection with Smith.
“They do recognize me, and they come up and say how much their meals mean to them,” said Smith.
What Meals of Love is finding is that the deliveries are doing so much more than filling bellies. It’s also helping neighbors to connect with their neighbors, as many gather together outside their homes on those delivery days and break bread together.
