BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - What do area farmers and ranchers expect from 2024? Jay Wilder of Wilder Farm in Burleson County is ready for 2024, whatever may come, but he hopes it’s a good year.

“We’ve had two really hard years in a row,” Wilder said. “And you know, that really hurts.”

He said the trick is to put enough away in the good years so a farm can handle leaner times.

“That’s always the plan, or the thought process, that when you have good years, to be able to put some back for the tough times. We just hope and pray that 2024 is a good one.”

His operation is ready for the year. Now, it’s all eyes on the market

”Today’s markets on our crops’ side are not really good compared to a couple of years ago, when they were really, really good. But our input costs, they have come down comparatively to two years ago, just not to the point where our market today can support those costs.”

Even with all the uncertainty navigating into a new year, Wilder has spent a lifetime out on this farm doing what he loves most.

“I’ve worked out here all my life, on the weekends, after school with the 4–H animals, and I was always out here as much as I could be. If you’re involved in agriculture, you love the land. Once I got out here and got involved, I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done today.”
