COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Children from low-income families often rely on the food served at school to fill their bellies, so when it comes to weekends or holidays they may go hungry.

This week’s Be Remarkable winner is an educator who is making sure that doesn’t happen.

Erin Bywater is in her sixth year of teaching dual language classes at College Station’s Oakwood Intermediate School.

Hang out in her classroom for a few minutes and you’ll see her passion for teaching and caring, but her love for the students extends beyond the classroom. Bywater also runs the campus food pantry and it’s why her colleague Harmonie Thomas nominated her for this week’s award.

“She’s always looking out for everybody. She looks out for the kids and the staff members. She puts everybody before herself and that’s what I love about Mrs Bywater,” said Thomas.

Every Friday, Mrs. Bywater sends home backpacks with kids who need them packed with food, toiletries, or other necessities that the children or their families may need. She says after being in other countries, she recognizes the challenge and adjustment that can come along with being in a new place.

“So, if I can just help them and just know that on the weekends they’re going to be okay, that’s what I’m going to do,” said Bywater.

The food pantry is made possible with the help of volunteers, sponsors, and donors.

This is why KBTX and Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers proudly present Mrs. Erin Bywater with this week’s Be Remarkable award.
