BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Icy weather like the Brazos Valley saw this week means extra preparations out on the farm.

According to one farmer in Burleson County, this job requires a 24/7 mentality.

“We’re checking antifreeze, and all of our irrigation motors,” said farmer Jay Wilder. “And tractors. We’re trying to get our sprayers into storage.”

These are the kind of tasks farmers have to anticipate ahead of severe weather. Besides looking out for crops and equipment, there’s also livestock to think about.

“We’re in full calving mode right now,” he said. “So, we’ve got to protect those babies as well. It’s not just about the mom – it’s about the mom and the baby.”

He and his family are no strangers to freeze prep. For over 100 years, this has been the Wilder’s way of life.

“Our farming operation was started by our Great–grandfather in 1912,” he explained. “I have twin boys that are involved, and my dad, 82 years old. He’ll be right there with us on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. He’ll be right there with us.”

It may be cold, and the work may be hard, but Wilder loves this life so much, he’s willing to forgo the idea of a vacation.

“A vacation for us is going to a cattle sale!” he said. “Or something like that, an equipment sale. It’s hard to come by a vacation!”
