Rory McIlroy said he hopes his divorce from Erica Stoll is "respectful and amicable" as he confirmed he filed papers in Florida.

The couple married at Ashford Castle in Cong, Co Mayo, on April 22, 2017. The 35-year-old Northern Irish golfer submitted the paperwork in Florida on Monday, ending the seven-year marriage.

The couple have a three-year-old daughter, Poppy. McIlroy said he hopes the divorce is "respectful and amicable".

A spokeswoman for McIlroy said: "Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed. They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."

The couple met at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. Erica was working at the event as a PGA official and woke McIlroy up so he didn't miss his tee time.

McIlroy thanked her for arranging a police escort after he missed his alarm. McIlroy was engaged to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki at the time but they split in 2014.
