U2 are the highest-earning band from Ireland or the UK so far this year.

Bono, 64, and co have banked more than €118 million from 23 shows in Las Vegas, playing to 382,000 fans. They are almost €35.5m ahead of nearest rivals Coldplay in the live performance revenues.

Chris Martin, 47, and his band took in nearly €95m – not including last weekend’s headlining set at Glastonbury. That sum was earned from selling around 730,000 seats.

After that, Irish and UK acts are a long way off the top two’s earnings. Mullingar singer Niall Horan, 30, also makes the top 10 with earnings of almost €12m.

Electric pop stars Depeche Mode made €47m, while former Beatle Paul McCartney, 82, picked up €41m for a run of nine shows. Ed Sheeran, 33, who has the third highest-grossing tour of all time, was the highest-earning act aged under 40 – making €14m from his six shows.

The figures, produced by Pollstar, then noted that Peter Kay, 51, proved that comedians can compete with rock and roll. The Bolton funnyman was laughing all the way to the bank with his 14 stand-up comeback shows, earning more than €12m.

Ex-One Direction star Niall had the next highest income after a great start to the year with his solo tour. This was followed up by The 1975, Take That and James Blunt in the top 12. Pollstar could not include figures from 36-year-old performer Adele’s Las Vegas shows as the star doesn’t report her takings.

However, her earnings would likely not touch the sums taken in by the top two acts. And global megastar Taylor Swift, 34, doesn’t release her figures either.
