An elderly cyclist who was found in a “serious condition” on the side of the road in Cork on Saturday morning has sadly passed away.

Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene of a fatal road traffic incident in Ballywilliam, Cobh at around 8:30am this morning. A mal cyclist in his 70s was found in a serious condition on the side of the road.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital to be treated for his injuries but sadly has since been pronounced deceased.

A post-mortem examination will be arranged and this will determine the course of the Garda investigation. The road was closed for a time but has since re-opened.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: “Gardaí attended the scene of a fatal road traffic incident that occurred at approximately 8:30am on Saturday 6 July at Ballywilliam, Cobh, Co. Cork.

“A male pedal cyclist, aged in his 70s, was found on the side of the road and taken to Cork University Hospital in a serious condition. He has since been pronounced deceased.

“A post-mortem examination will be arranged and this will determine the course of the Garda investigation. The road was closed for a time but has since re-opened.”
