As a lesson in moving from bargain basement to mid-mainstream respectability, few cars have risen as seamlessly as the Skoda Octavia.

Skoda just updated with a latest version and once again the signs are there of a steady move upmarket.

It has come a long way from 1996 when the first Octavia was made. I don’t think there has been one year in that 27-year timespan when I didn’t drive or test an Octavia at home or abroad.

The latest version’s exterior gets what they call “visual fine-tuning”. In other words, it looks a bit smarter. There’s a new-look grille and second-generation LED Matrix beam headlights.

The interior comes with nine design selections, a 13-inch infotainment display, a 10-inch digital display and chatbot ChatGPT is to be integrated as standard at a later date.

There are four petrol and two diesel engines as well as mild-hybrid options. There are two 1.5 TSI petrol engines (you can get mild-hybrid versions of them), two power-boosted 2.0 TSI petrols and two diesels. Power ranges from 116PS to 265PS.

And there are new safety and assistance systems while the Octavia’s Sportline and vRS push further on its sporting journey upmarket.

More than seven million Octavias have been sold since 1996 – making it the brand’s biggest seller.

This latest, fourth generation of the Octavia debuts Intelligent Park Assist and Remote Park Assist as it faces into a new era of challenge and change.
