The next electric vehicle from Ford is likely to be called the Capri, according to reports.

The crossover is based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform and reports suggest it will revive the famous name of what was a great car to drive.

It will be a companion to the larger Explorer so its rivals will include the Peugeot e-3008, Volkswagen ID 5 and the Volvo C40, among others.

Ford has described the new car as a “sports crossover” and promises it will be revealed soon. But it has stopped short of confirming the name. But there have been spy-shots.

Production of the new Explorer SUV is at the new Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Centre in Germany. The firm says it has invested €1.8bn in the site.

Equipped with “cutting-edge AI technology” and with more than 600 robots, it will have “unprecedented levels of quality”.

If it is called the Capri, brace yourself for a wave of nostalgia as the original had a huge following.
