Debut novel pays homage to writer’s Japanese heritage

The Irish winner of the Children’s Book of the Year award said she wanted to reflect her Japanese heritage when writing her young-adult novel Catfish Rolling.
Clara Kumagai (35), who was born in Vancouver to a Japanese father and Irish mother, moved with her family to Ireland when she was five, living in Westmeath and Cork before settling in Galway.
