Where to Find Hordes and Hordes Locations
This page of the Days Gone guide details Hordes, including what they are, where to find them, and the rewards for defeating them.
Hordes are giant groups of Swarmers. You can generally find them during the day resting in caves or other dark locations. At night they will move around as a group to their feeding grounds. Early in the game it is best to avoid hordes. Only after you have leveled up and acquired good weapons and plenty of throwables is it recommended that you attempt to take on hordes. Check out the Horde Tips and Strategy page for more details.

Horde Killer Rewards
There are 40 hordes that must be defeated to complete the Horde Killer storyline. Three of the 40 hordes will be defeated during the course of the main campaign. The remaining 37 hordes are side missions for the storyline. These hordes can be taken on at any time. The side mission hordes reward a fair amount of XP, Trust, and Credits. The total rewards for each region, and the camp that the Trust and Credits are applied to, are listed in the table below.
Horde Killer Side Missions | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Region | Camp | Hordes | XP | Trust | Credits |
Cascade | Copeland's | 8 | 16,000 | 12,800 | 4,400 |
Belknap | Hot Springs | 7 | 14,000 | 10,850 | 8,400 |
Lost Lake | Iron Mike's | 6 | 18,000 | 3,600 | 11,400 |

Highway 97 | Diamond Lake | 13 | 52,000 | 21,450 | 22,100 |
A defeated horde will also yield a lot of Swarmer ears. These can be traded in for bounties at any camp. Note that the carry limit for ears of one type is 999, so make sure you have traded in your Swarmer ears before you take on some of the larger hordes. Otherwise, you may leave a lot of ears on the ground.
Progressing through the Horde Killer storyline will also reward you with four weapons and upgrades for those weapons, plus a custom skin for your bike.

Horde Locations
After Deacon has left the southern regions and returned to Lost Lake following the mission Ascending from the Underworld, the Horde Killer storyline will be added to the Active Storylines menu, and objective markers will be added to the map for any side mission hordes that have yet to be defeated. If you wish to take on some hordes before then, or you want to know where they are in order to avoid them, this guide will show you where to find them.
The locations for the 37 side mission hordes are shown in the following maps. Each horde is listed along with its estimated size and the type of shelter it uses. Note that these are the daytime locations. Hordes rest during the day in some type of shelter such as a cave. They leave their shelters in the evening to feed, and return to the same shelters in the early morning.

Other Hordes
As noted, the Horde Killer storyline includes three hordes that are defeated during the main campaign. These hordes count towards the storyline rewards, but they do not count towards the regional progress trackers in the map. The missions are:
- You Alone I Have Seen - Highway 97 region, 300 Swarmers. The horde must be defeated to complete the mission. The mission takes place at Chemult Station. This main mission horde is seperate from the side mission horde shown above.
- Keep Them Safe - Iron Butte region, 300 Swarmers. The horde must be defeated to complete the mission. This is the only horde in the Iron Butte region.
- I'll Save Some For You - Lost Lake region, 500 Swarmers. This is by far the largest horde. It must be defeated to complete the mission. It is possible to reduce the size of the horde prior to the mission by killing some of the horde, retreating, then returning and killing more. Repeat as needed. The horde is located at the old sawmill in the Lost Lake region. Rikki will show the horde to Deacon during the mission It's a Long Story.
There are additional hordes that are not included in the Horde Killer storyline.
- In the main mission What It Takes to Survive, a horde will be encountered inside the Ice Wind Lava Caves in the Highway 97 region. This horde has 100 Swarmers. It must be defeated to complete the mission. The cave entrance is a short distance southeast of the Aspen Butte Ambush Camp. If you explore the cave prior to the mission you will not find the horde.
- In the encampment job for Diamond Lake called Just Doing My Job, a horde with an estimated 300 Swarmers will be encountered. The horde does not have to be defeated in order to complete the mission. This horde will only spawn during this mission.
- There is a horde of 30 Swarmers roaming the canyon that surrounds the Belknap Caves Ambush Camp. It is not necessary to defeat this horde.
- A horde of approximately 50 Swarmers shelters in the tunnel south of the Spruce Lake Ambush Camp in the Crater Lake region. This horde seems to randomly respawn, and could be used to practice dealing with hordes and to farm Swarmer ears. This horde can be found sheltering in the tunnel day or night.
